When Should You Replace a Mattress?

Use performance and condition—not a fixed calendar—to decide when replacement is due.

Updated August 21, 2026 · Editorial analysis, not firsthand testing

Replacement timing varies by construction, materials, body weight, use and care. The useful question is whether the mattress still performs its job.

Signs that matter

Visible sagging, permanent impressions, loss of support, damaged materials or a changed sleep need are stronger signals than age alone.

Check the foundation too

A damaged or incompatible base can mimic mattress failure. Inspect the bed frame and foundation before blaming the mattress.

Warranty is not lifespan

A long warranty does not mean the mattress will feel new for the full term. Coverage applies only to defined defects and conditions.
