Layla describes the Essential as a 9-inch foam mattress using a 2-inch OpenCell+ memory-foam comfort layer over a 7-inch polyfoam base. Layla also states that its foams are CertiPUR-US certified and that the mattress is fiberglass-free. Those are manufacturer claims; Mattress Mentor has not independently lab-tested the materials.

Who should consider it?
The Essential makes the clearest sense when budget, a straightforward foam feel and moderate contouring matter more than a tall profile or reinforced coil system. Sleep Foundation's testing was most favorable for side sleepers under 230 pounds and especially lighter sleepers; it found support less convincing for many sleepers above 230 pounds.
