Mattress Motion Isolation Explained

How mattresses absorb partner movement and which constructions tend to transfer less vibration.

Updated August 21, 2026 · Editorial analysis, not firsthand testing

Motion isolation is the mattress's ability to keep movement localized rather than sending it across the sleep surface.

Why foam often wins

Foam absorbs and dissipates movement instead of rebounding strongly, so all-foam beds often perform well for partners.

The tradeoff

A very responsive mattress may be easier to move on but can transmit more motion. Pocketed coils reduce transfer compared with interconnected springs.

When it matters

Light sleepers sharing a bed, partners on different schedules and pets moving at night are common reasons to prioritize motion isolation.
