Guide
How Thick Should a Mattress Be?
Choose thickness based on comfort-layer depth, body weight, bed height and construction.
Mattress height affects how much space designers have for comfort, transition and support layers, but thickness alone does not prove quality.
Low-profile mattresses
Beds around 8–9 inches can be simpler and easier to move, but leave less room for deep comfort systems.
10–12 inch mattresses
This common range gives designers more flexibility for multiple foam layers or hybrid components.
Higher profiles
Very thick mattresses may provide deeper cushioning but raise overall bed height and can require deep-pocket sheets.
Fit first
Judge the layer design and firmness before using total height as a deciding factor.
